Commissioned Art
What does it mean to 'commission an artwork'?
If you have an idea for a painting that doesn't currently exist on my website, you might like to talk with me about painting it especially for you. We can discuss the subject of the painting, the size of the artwork, framing and timeframes.
Who can commission an artwork?
Anyone! I have done commissions for individuals and families, and companies ranging from local to multinational.
How much does it cost to commission an original bokeh painting?
The fee I charge to paint a commission depends mostly on size and any framing preferences, but factors like complexity and time frame might affect the price I quote too. Generally, the prices you see on available works on my website are in line with what you can expect to pay.
Shipping may be additional, depending on where in the world you live.

The scope of the work may vary depending on who or what the painting is for. For example, a painting that is destined to hang in a home or workplace is usually a simple agreement to paint a scene on canvas, at an agreed size, by an agreed date. The painting is delivered and you go on to enjoy it for years.
If the artwork is for a corporate customer, depending on their intended use of the artwork, there may be other deliverables around sharing/recording the process, and things like ongoing licensing for the use of the image in your marketing, packaging, in-store displays etc. Per standard industry practise, these factors may incur an additional fee which can be discussed.
What does the commissioning process look like?
- Getting started: you get in touch to kickstart our conversation, using my Contact Form (below) or email me: mel@thepennydropsart.co.nz.
- The Reference Photo: agreeing on the subject of the painting is the most important step. I have a large library of my own images which may be suitable to use. Or I can arrange to visit a location to photograph a scene. I prefer to work from my own images where possible. Your approval of the reference photo is the most important step in the success of the final painting - it gives you confidence in what you will receive.
- The other details to decide upon: we also need to discuss size, surface (e.g. will it be on canvas?), any framing, shipping, and the timeframe for delivery.
- The quote: based on all this information, I can provide a final quote for you. A deposit is usually required before I get underway with the painting.
- Painting commences: I'll start with an undercoat of colour, then paint Layer 1. This is usually looser and lighter than the final layer - I often call it the 'ugly stage', so don't panic when you see this - but it will give you a good indication of the composition - the 'bones' of the painting. Once this is dry, I'll complete Layer 2 - after this, the painting is 98% finished. After some more drying time, I'll go back over the painting with some final transluscent 'circles of light' to add extra sparkle and depth to the artwork. More drying time, then a coat of varnish for protection and to even out the sheen of the surface.
- Delivery: the exciting part - it's on its way to you!

How much time does the process take?
It's best to allow up to 2 months, depending on my workload at the time. I paint with oils, which take longer to dry than acrylic (but are worth the wait!), and I use multiple layers to achieve a beautiful depth to my work.
Can I get updates on my commissioned painting?
Yes, of course. I can provide a photo after Layer 1, and more as the painting draws near completion. Because I'm working closely to the original photo we agreed on, there shouldn't be any surprises. I may also share progress photos on social media if that's ok with you - respecting your wishes, especially if it's a surprise for someone!
