'Passage'
Original bokeh oil painting
In soft focus, the Dunedin Railway Station emerges from the pre-dawn darkness - caught in passage between night and day, between what was and what remains. Once it was the pulse of the city, the gateway to everywhere. Now it holds something quieter: a reminder of when our dreams moved along rails and we believed in grand destinations. There's a passage of time written into its stone, into corridors that once echoed with urgent footsteps. We didn't always know where we were going, but we knew there was somewhere to go. And perhaps that belief in passage itself - in movement, in change, in the possibility of arrival - is what endures even after the trains have grown silent.
Dunedin's Railway Station is one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand - but rarely seen like this. The lights are magnified by the blurred effect captured initially in camera, and then translated with oil paint onto canvas.
Bokeh: The soft focus allows light to grow and gives the painting an air of abstraction and conveys a message of the ways light finds you through the darkness and the beauty of that softness, of taking the focus off the 'sharp edges' and 'nitty gritty details'.
