There’s something quietly magical about a city before it has fully woken.

This original oil painting captures an early morning glimpse of the Dunedin Railway Station, one of New Zealand’s most recognisable historic landmarks. Against a deep, dark sky, the station and surrounding streets are illuminated by pools of warm city light, softened and transformed through my distinctive blurry, bokeh-inspired painting style.

Rather than recording every architectural detail, I’ve painted the feeling of the place - the glow of lights, the hush of the early hour, and that fleeting moment when a city sits somewhere between night and day.

About the painting

Painted on a 8 x 16 inch (~20cm x 40cm) boxed canvas, the sides of the canvas are painted solid dark blue.

My paintings are often considered 'unfocused', but I prefer to say they're 'differently focused'. By softening the details, I invite you to focus on the atmosphere, colour and light that can so easily be overlooked when we’re busy looking for everything at once.
